 Introductory App description / Proof of concept - Capcasion

"Capture the Occasion with Capcasion!"

Capcasion = The best way for your family, friends, group, event or organization to capture the entire occasion!

Whether it is a wedding, anniversary party, company event, graduation, concert, the touring of a site during your vacation or a treasured visit with family and friends; every moment, snap shot and vantage point is important and special.

What does it do?

Capcasion, provides the simplest way for every individual in attendance to contribute to capturing any occasion!

The simplest descriptions of what Capcasion provides, is "crowd sourced, social, videography and photography."  In essence, utilizing Capcasion allows everyone's, individual, eye-witness account, to be unified into a single, final, video representation and central online archive for each occasion.  If the occasion is captured with Capcasion then a connection is not only made between the individuals in attendance by also each piece of footage and photography is united together for each attendee to share and view.

No longer will a smattering of photos or video be left in the belly of each person's individual cell phone, digital camera or camcorder only to then be scattered on various webpages, photo accounts or Facebook walls.  Now your memories can unite! Into a synchronized, professionally edited, exceptionally captured, fully documented occasion!  That is Capcasion!

How does it work?

When ever you are recording your memories, Capcasion is working hard in the background to accurately record the exact time each video or photo was shot.  Once your video is uploaded or queued for upload to a specific registered occasion or event, Capcasion generates a "time-code" file and pairs it with the photo or video. Now each precisely synchronized, captured, media can later be precisely combined with any other captures recorded of that same event in time.

Capcasion brings these moments together and then brings them to life with the use of not only “time-code”, but also facial recognition as well as source and subject positional analysis.  The results of the combined experience become an extraordinary, sharable, social, visual! One which is even greater than the sum of the parts!

Why should I use it?

Capcasion also avoids the unfortunate downgrades of your cell phone or mobile devices videos once they are uploaded directly from your device.  If your video was shot in 720p or 1080i High-definition resolution, then Capcasion maintains this quality!

Utilizing Capcasion also means you are guaranteed to get a copy of each attendees results!

No more loss of quality, No more loss of memories, No more loss of time...

There is nothing more frustrating than wishing to look back on a memory, weeks or year later, only to find that your friend or family never sent you a copy of the photos and videos they took; or your smart phone was recently upgraded and you forgot where you put those shots; or you have several videos of an event, but you never had the time to edit them together into one video that would be fun for other to enjoy.

Capcasion is social!

However, the social connection is the occasion! Just by capturing a special occasion with Capcasion a connection is made between you and the other attendees.  Each registered Capcasion event is given a QR code. This code can be printed and posted at you event, or invitation can be sent to any email recipient or via sms, text messaging.  (Corporate or public venue event sponsors have the opportunity of registering for a “pro” account and printing large sscale Capcasion banners to encourage attendee participation.)

In addition to simply scanning a posted QR code and preparing the free Capcasion app to capture and unite your clips with other attendees; each event is given it’s own website URL, allowing folks to pre-register for an event, or get additional event information.

In addition, we are launching full Capcasion/facebook integration with our facebook app.  And a Twitter Hashtag for each registered Capcasion event is created, to allow for quick and easy updates of footage and photography captured to be viewed and shared.

In addition we are allowing you to start "Pinning" your Capcasion videos to your Pinterest account!

How do I get Started?

1st download the app, and create your free Capcasion account!

Capcasion provides you with a way to invite any attendees to an occasion to join the fun of capturing the event.  Think of how simple it is these days to send an eVite, you Capcasion account work in the same way.  You simply add the names and emails of those whom you wish to make aware that you have a Capcasion coming up and they are invited to help!

EVENT SIGNAGE will read:

Help us capture this occasion!!

  • Download the following app here - (QR Code)

Once installed -

  • Scan the event Code here - (QR Code)

Capcasion is a mix of: YouTube, evite, Picasa Web, Pixel Pipe & Animoto

Therefore I'm curious if YouTube can actually be used to house the videos? (Does Google offer a YouTube API?)  Can an eVite-esq contact system be implemented on our servers to handle account registration details on a per event basis.

- Our servers will primarily be a place were meta-data containing the “magic glue”, connecting the dots between, “time codes” and privately posted YouTube hosted videos destination for each events meta-data will be housed.  Additionally, could code be licensed from Pixel Pipe, involving the details on how they maintain and upload full-quality version of the mobile devices media content to each respective location directly from teach device. (For instance the iPhone does a substantial (95%) downgrade of any CODEC uploaded to YouTube, versus the original 720p footage.)  The Animoto type, automatically combined compositions, features should be considered as part of a Free-mium upgrade potential for our account holders.

HIGH END Capcasion future features!!:
  • User/viewer “crowd curation” of each Capcasion events, “best of”, video clips.  These clips are then utilized to gradually refine the final edited compilation of each Capcasion result.
    • “Emotion detection” via front facing cameras would serve as an exceptional passive, automated method of rating / curating the best clips provided from each occasion
  • Of course facial recognition on steroids! Becomes, full-motion, 4D, facial recognition! - Thanks to a coordination of “time-code”, sourced from the device’s highly accurate, internal GPS chip (when available); we then match each event clip, containing similar and/or different views a facially identified individual.  The time coordinated & facially recognized footage is then free to deliver multiple angles of any single individuals’ response or performance within the occasion.
    • Now it is time to license some state of the art software magic!
      • Until the exceptional resource of light-field, captured, pixels are common place in each of our digital shoots, thanks to Lytro Ren Ng’s technology, we must instead just depend on the analysis of flat 2d pixels in order to clean matching movement patterns and human form recognition,
      • Without the benefits of Z-depth capture, such as in the case of Microsoft's Kinex - Such application would provide venues featuring focused, star performance, dance, athleticism or shear showmanship weather individual or team can all be coordinated from different angles.
  • But imagine the thrill at an Olympic games of watch the playback being experienced through the eyes of all those who were there live.
    • Each with a different perspective, some with varied quality of lens, seating distance, and steady positioning of the shot, but all with a compelling result when aggregated into one fail swoop clip, that provide
  • Other Future features:
    • Credits with the name of each contributor.
      • Credits featuring the names of each subject tagged within the content via a hyperlink which positions (scrubs) you directly to the point of the contribution within the video Compilation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ** Recent Inspiration **  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Were it not for the generous efforts of one of my most respected Friends; and their willingness to not only attend my overseas, destination wedding, but to also man my own cell phone during the service; my wife and myself would have never been able to relive the moment she walked down the isle.
While we had our two simple one-click cameras set up on tripod up near the alter area where the vows were to be shared. They were positioned at a stationary location at the front of the event and set to record the entire event unmanned; and therefor did not even have an unobstructed view of the center isle, even if they were pointed there during the brides precession.
This fortunate feat of videography performed by my close friend at the moment it matter most, combined with the invitation my own cousin recently made to me on behalf of being charged with videographing her own wedding ceremony just 5 months after my wedding, caused me to search and SEARCH for a method by which I could simply request attendees help us capture the moment and donate their footage to our combined archives so that we might created a combined, corwd sourced compilation in the days that followed the event.
Since Capcasion is not yet a real product; in order to help out with my cousins more recent occasion, I planned on using, plain old, manually sent, e-mail to rally the troops for a personal family occasion (on 3/18/2012) ; I considered asking that each person will to help me with this proof of concept, install a 3rd party app called "Pixel Pipe" on their smart phone device.
Instruction I prepared for installing the Pixel Pipe App:
iPhone App download via iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pixelpipe-post-upload-to-social/id290648828?mt=8
Android App, attached (Both Pro and Standard). Goto "Settings", "Applications" and make sure "Unknown sources" is checked, in order to install attached ".apk" file.
Following the event I hoped to gather the resulting clips from the respective Pixel Pipe account I set up in advance and then edit them each together manually on a local NVE system.
Instead, I received the following example (click here) of emails from those who even bothered to let me know they had indeed captured any event footage.
To say the least, despite both mine and my cousin's best efforts to garner support just days prior to the event, we received NO confirmations prior to the big day that someone else would be filming and would donate their results towards our efforts, but even worse we have only received two confirmations since the event that there is any video for the taking other than the footage both myself and my new wife recorded while there.  :-(
NOT TO MENTION!!!  …”It is time for entrepreneurs to go ALL IN!!!” - http://techcrunch.com/2012/04/11/instagram-all-in/?grcc=33333Z98ZtrendingZ0
(Indecently, The results for my cousin's wedding worked out GREAT!
...the result were dependant on only four (4) video cameras and one (1) audio recorder:
  • The video result takes place in "real time".
  • All sound was captured from a Sony dedicated IC recorder.
  • All video was synchronized via the soundtrack.
  • 76 scene transitions featuring 5 different camera angles (one videographer was repositioned during event).
  • The video source was shot from two cell phones and two one-click cameras.
  • The two one-click cameras were in video mode and on tripods.
  • The two cell phone were each handheld.
...enjoy!)
:: UPDATE ::
Over the last year, this space of "Crowd Sourced" videography, and even automated or assisted online editing of crowd sourced footage has actual seen some start-up and fully matured offerings coming to the market of web based services and Apps.
Here is an ongoing "short list" of some of the leading providers and startups:
  • Google+ Hangout's "Party Mode": http://support.google.com/plus/answer/2618786?hl=en
  • Mark Cuban's recently introduced, "Switch Cam": http://make.switchcam.com/
    • http://techcrunch.com/2013/02/25/switchcam-iphone-director/
  • For just Photos, there is the recently introduced, "Lens Mob": https://lensmob.com/
  • ...more to come!
And I'm sure many more to come!
I first drafted this document and App concept in the Fall of 2011. (Immediately following my wedding. Although I yearned for such tech, and formulated the concept in the months prior to leaving the country for the ceremony in Italy.)  I knew then, what I know now; if you don't move quickly and take the necessary steps required to bring an idea to fruition, then someone else surely will.
The life of software development and product innovation and design in general, move in "web days", these days. There is no chance of sitting on the sidelines and still finding yourself on top or at the forefront of any innovations or revelations in this competitive world wide, information age marketplace.  Dive in, get passionate about your ideas, or be left behind in the dust!
...It's that simple.
